islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique
St George’s, Grenada – Wednesday, July 03, 2024, 7:00 p.m. The Ministry of Health, through the National Disaster Management Agency, is
exploring avenues to bring additional relief to the hurricane ravaged islands of
Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
Following a visit to the islands on Tuesday, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Shawn
Charles, reports that five ( 5 of the six ( 6 health facilities in Carriacou and Petite
Martinique, suffered significant damage during the passage of Hurricane Beryl,
including Princess Royal Hospital, which sustained over 75% of roof damage. This
rendered the facility unusable.
At present, services a re being delivered from the Hillsborough Health Center,
which fared better than the other facilities, when the Category 4 system ripped
through the Sister Islands.
Healthcare professionals on the mainland have signaled their willingness to
volunteer in re lief efforts, however, the major challenge is the accommodations on
the battered islands.
During a press briefing at the National Disaster Management Agency on
Wednesday evening, Dr Charles said the priority is assisting patients with
emergency needs.
So far, at least three (3) patients have been transported from Carriacou to the
General Hospital on the mainland to seek medical attention.
All d onations should be consistent with the prescribed ne eds list and be filtered
through and or dropped off at the NaDMA Headquarters in Morne Jaloux, St
George.
